THE BOX PROJECT

CASE STUDY - ROY LICHTENSTEIN

It was my first Industrial Design course ... and I was a painter.  The assignment was to pick a famous artist or designer and replicate his or her work by designing a 'box' that thematically represented the stylistic qualities of that artist. We were a team with many, very different strengths, but we all had humor in common. We chose Roy Lichtenstein, famous for his remarkably 2D pop-art work, with the only real element of dimension existing as dots and other graphic elements.

This piece was largely made of balsa wood. I illustrated the explosion pieces and we were able to mount them onto foam core and attach the balsa wood 'box.' The box sides are transparency films with dots, stripes, and solids printed in ink to provide perceived depth.
